This latest commission is slightly unusual only because rather than working on a 2D canvas, I'm painting onto a 3D stoneware statue which, despite its size, is incredibly heavy! So after scrubbing and priming the surface, I applied a couple of coats of black gesso and left it to dry for a few days in between. Then, with the help of a number of photos taken from different angles, I started painting the broad white areas, trying to leave the larger black patches. This took a few layers tinted with hues of blue and cream to make the white fur look bright and warm. Next, I concentrated on painting her face colours and then painted over the gesso with black paint, finishing up with correcting the markings and adding the dots and dashes on her coat, smudging her paws and bringing her eyes to life. I just need to check everything's in the right place and paint her ball before varnishing...
