I often hear people say that they would like to sketch confidently or paint more freely, so these two 3-week drawing and painting courses will enable you to loosen up and quicken your artistic skills. I will be demonstrating a variety of dynamic techniques for those who wish to be challenged to capture a scene, an object or a portrait in a more immediate way. Using pencils, chalk & charcoal and pens for the drawing course, and acrylic, watercolour or oil paints for the painting course we will try out a number of key techniques until you find the ones that best work for you. These courses are suitable for artists who are already familiar with drawing and painting techniques or beginners who are willing to jump in at the deep end!

NEXT COURSE: Please contact Kate if you are interested in either of these courses as they can be included later on in the year.

COST: £160 each for 3 classes of 3 hours, includes teas, coffees and homemade cake.

Materials List

For the first week on both courses bring some objects and a selection of photos you would like to draw or paint as we will be testing our observation skills. You will also need cartridge paper or sketchbook and lots of different sized surfaces to draw or paint on each week - the bigger the better - plus HB or 2B pencils, a drawing pen and an eraser! A table easel or standing easel is useful to get more energy into your artwork by standing up or working at an angle. Clip your papers to a board with bulldog clips for quick changeovers.

For the drawing course, I recommend also bringing a selection of pencils ie, 2B to 9B; chalk and charcoal; drawing or dipping pens with ink; coloured pencils or pastels, blutack or masking tape.

For the painting course you can bring acrylic, oil or watercolour paper or primed canvases or boards (A4 minimum size); acrylic, watercolour and/or oil paints (three primary colours plus white will be enough); mixing palette; a selection of large brushes (I particularly recommend Rosemary & Co. Please ask to see their catalogue and my selection of brushes); palette knives (optional); jars for water/Zest-it thinner; kitchen towel/rags; protective clothing/apron. For more information on paints see individual Acrylic, Watercolour and Oils Courses.
